The USAMTS is open to all middle and high school students in the United States. The program is intended for high school students, but exceptionally strong middle school students should be able to tackle many of the problems.

In order to join the program, you must:

  1. Register online for the USAMTS by clicking the Register tab at left and following the directions. Participation in the USAMTS is FREE.
  2. Complete and submit the USAMTS Entry Form. You may submit the Entry Form with the first set of solutions you submit. There is also a copy of this form on the My USAMTS Forms page.

That's all it takes to join the USAMTS. Then you're ready to:

  1. Download the problems for the next round. (Problems will be available in late August, 2006)
  2. Write elegant solutions to the problems following our procedure for submitting solutions. Elegant solutions typeset in LaTeX will be published in the official solutions if permission to do so is granted (click here for permission form). Please note that you do not have to use LaTeX; you may handwrite your solutions if you wish.
  3. Submit your solutions by the due dates below. (Note: These are postmark deadlines.)

    Round 1 October 9, 2007
    Round 2 November 19, 2007
    Round 3 January 8, 2008
    Round 4 March 11, 2008

Solution forms can be on the My USAMTS Forms page. Keep a copy of your solutions, but send us the original, not the copy. Do not send us the problems. Solutions may be submitted by:
    • Email: solutions@usamts.org. We will only accept the following file types: DVI, PDF, RTF, TEX, TXT, TIF, GIF, BMP, JPG, EPS. We will not accept Word documents for security reasons. We strongly encourage students to submit solutions typeset with LaTeX (click here to learn how). If you do so, please email both the typeset document (your PDF or DVI file) and the original source document (meaning all your LaTeX code - only these will be considering for publication among the official solutions). A template LaTeX form will be available on the My USAMTS Forms page for you to use, along with thorough directions about how to use it.
    • Fax: (619) 445-2379
    • Snail mail: USAMTS, PO Box 2090 Alpine, CA 91903-2090. There is no need to use express mail, registered, next day, certified, etc; we discourage such approaches. Address the envelope correctly, and be sure your return address is on it.
  4. After the papers are graded, you will be able to find your scores and grader comments on the My USAMTS Scores page. The names of top students will be listed on the Leaders page provided the students and their parents grant permission to do so. The most interesting solutions that are typeset in LaTeX will be published along with the official solutions (again, if permission is granted). The permssion form can be found on the Forms page, and may be submitted at any time. (A copy of the permission form is also included with the Entry Form.)
